Weight Watchers Milk Shake (Flex or Core)

This is from a very old Weight Watchers pamphlet for Week One of the diet. I love this milk shake. It's surprisingly thick and tasty!

Servings: 1

1 cup skim milk or 1 cup 1% low-fat milk
4 ice cubes
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or almond extract) or 1 teaspoon instant coffee
sugar substitute
Directions:

1 Place all ingredients in blender.
2 Blend until all ice is crushed and milk shake is thick.
3 It really does become thick.

The first known printed reference to a “milkshake” dates back to 1885. It contained one part whiskey, 'for medicinal purposes'. 'Shakes' got their name from being served in bars. If the customer enjoyed the specialty drink, he shook hands with the bartender. If not, the bartender wouldn’t get a tip. The modern milkshakes were a mixture of milk, malt and a flavoring. The malt added an ice cream texture. The electric blender was invented in 1922 JUST for the making of milkshakes. In parts of New England, a milkshake is often referred to as a "frappe" (the e is silent)
